This is one of the deepest mysteries in the Holy Bible, and many people have asked this question with sincere hearts. Who is Melchizedek? Where did he come from? How can a man exist with no father, no mother, and no genealogy? Is he Holy God? Is he Lord Jesus? Or is he something else entirely? If you truly understand this revelation, your understanding of Christ, priesthood, and divine order will shift forever.
Let us go deep.
The first time we see Melchizedek is in Genesis 14:18
“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.”
This appearance is sudden. No background. No introduction. He simply appears as both a king and a priest. This alone is already unusual because in Israel, kings and priests were separate offices. But here is a man who carries both.
Now let's go deeper.
Hebrews 7:3 says
“Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.”
This is where the confusion begins.
Beloved, understand this carefully. The Holy Bible did not say he is the Son of Living God. It says he was made like the Son of Living God.
This means Melchizedek is not Everlasting God, and he is not Lord Jesus Himself. Rather, he is a prophetic representation, a living symbol, a divine pattern that reflects the eternal priesthood of Lord Jesus Christ.
So what does “without father, without mother” mean?
It does not mean he literally had no parents. It means his genealogy was not recorded. In the Jewish system, lineage determined priesthood. Every priest came from a known family line, especially from the tribe of Levi.
But Melchizedek’s priesthood did not come from human lineage. It came directly from Most High God.That is the mystery.He represents a priesthood that is not based on bloodline, not based on human system, but based on Divine appointment.
Now go deeper again.
Psalm 110:4 says
“The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
This was a prophecy about Lord Jesus.This means Lord Jesus did not come as a priest under the Levitical system. He came under a higher, eternal order, the order of Melchizedek.That order has no beginning and no end.
That is why Hebrews 7:16 says
“Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.”
Melchizedek is a shadow.Lord Jesus is the reality.Melchizedek appeared without recorded beginning and without recorded end to paint a picture of Christ, who truly has no beginning and no end.
Now hear this deep truth.
Melchizedek is not Great God, but his appearance was designed by Great God to reveal a mystery that human understanding could not easily grasp.He is a Divine signpost pointing to Lord Jesus.That is why Abraham, the father of faith, gave him tithes. This shows that Melchizedek’s priesthood is higher than Abraham’s lineage, which later produced Levi and the entire priesthood of Israel.
Hebrews 7:7 says
“And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.”
Melchizedek blessed Abraham. That means his priesthood is greater.
Now connect it.Lord Jesus comes in that same higher order. Not from Levi, but from Judah. Not by law, but by eternal life.So the real mystery is not Melchizedek himself. The real mystery is the revelation of Lord Jesus Christ hidden in him.
Beloved, do not be confused. Melchizedek is not The Almighty God. He is not an angel. He is not Lord Jesus in disguise.He is a man used by Holy God to reveal an eternal priesthood that would later be fulfilled perfectly in Christ.
